Ferret Bedding

If you are going to own a ferret, you must be certain that you have equipped your home for your pet. One of the most important purchases you can make is a quality ferret cage. Once you have the cage however, you must consider the comfort of your pet ferret.

Just as you would not enjoy walking on metal grates in bare feet, your ferret will not enjoy his time in the cage very much if his tiny paws are constantly causing him discomfort. The wire bottom of most metal ferret cages are built to keep the ferret locked inside without much regard to its comfort. As a pet owner it is your responsibility to see to it that your ferret’s home is more than just an uncomfortable metal box.

Fortunately, making your ferret comfortable is not all that difficult to do. Many people cover the wire bottom of the cage with some type of solid material that cannot be destroyed by the ferret’s urges to dig and claw at things. A fitted sheet of linoleum tile can be used or some other material can be substituted that is resistant to damage and which will not break apart into pieces that can be swallowed by your pet. Some cages may be sold with an optional solid plastic bottom. You may want to consider purchasing it for your ferret’s comfort.

On top of this layer comes the bedding itself. There are different ways to handle the issue of bedding. Ferrets like to be able to dig down, curl up and snuggle into their bedding. Some people like to use soft fabrics because they believe it will be more comfortable for their pets. While this may be true, soft fabrics require constant monitoring for damage. Because ferrets will chew on some bedding material, there is a risk that they may ingest small pieces of it. Ferrets do not digest non-food materials very well at all and this can wreak havoc on its digestive system. Bedding of a tougher sort is recommended if you would like to avoid the worries of your ferret eating its bedding.

Some people like to get their ferrets hammocks or sleep sacks. Many ferrets love this private little chamber. Your pet’s reaction will of course, depend on his or her own preferences. Still others like to introduce small “dog houses” into the cage that allow their ferrets a place to slip away and catch a nap. Whatever you decide to get for your ferrets bedding needs, remember to consider its safety first.
